I hear you! And that feeling of being able to go anywhere, it seems like such a terrible American conceit--"The Freedom Of The Open Road!"--but it's very real and so alluring. When I was an undergrad sometimes I used to invent really feeble excuses to just get in the car and drive away from campus. Because I could. Not because I wanted to abandon school (I didn't, at all), but there was still a feeling of liberation in the sense that physical departure was possible at any moment.
