Per Trans News Network, there are currently 10 bills on Gavin Newsom's desk that support LBGQT+ rights:

Trans Rights Bills

  • AB 82 / SB 497 – These privacy-focused bills provide needed confidentiality for patients, providers, and volunteers involved with trans healthcare. AB 82 offers important protections for reproductive healthcare, and prevents prescription data about drugs like testosterone and mifepristone from being stored in databases that could be accessible by other states.

  • AB 1084 / SB 59 – This pair of legal name change bills includes one that streamlines the process of updating legal name and gender, and another to ensure that older court records of name changes can’t be used to out or dox trans people.

  • SB 418 – Bolsters nondiscrimination protections for health insurance plans and requires the plans to cover up to a 12-month supply of prescription hormones.

LGBTQ+ Rights Bills

  • AB 554 – Requires insurance coverage of all FDA-approved medications that prevent HIV such as PreP, without prior authorization.

  • AB 727 – Mandates that schools and universities must provide all youth suicide hotline information, including numbers for LGBTQ+ hotlines in the wake of Trump’s defunding of the Trevor Project hotline.

  • AB 678 – Requires state housing programs to coordinate with LGBTQ+ communities to ensure homelessness programs remain inclusive and nondiscriminatory for queer people experiencing homelessness, directly combatting federal efforts to force homeless shelters to ban trans people.

  • SB 590 – Expands paid family leave protections to include the diverse caregiving needs of queer families.

  • SB 450 – Clarifies California adoption law to allow for LGBTQ+ couples who live outside of California to adopt children born in the state through California proceedings, which are more inclusive than many other states.

Call him at (916) 445-2841 to ask him to sign these bills into law.

They sent me an email reminding me to check that I had the necessary visas for travel.

Which, fair enough, because Canada requires an ETA for Australian citizens to travel there. And I was pretty sure that I had one, but I double-checked because one should always double-check.

And then I read the email they'd sent more carefully.

Dear reader, they sent me an email reminding me to check that I had the necessary visa for travel to AUSTRALIA...

Re-Reed-ing: FANTASTIC FOUR #406-407

In the FF "Atlantis Rising" storyline, Atlantis rose.

Sorry, couldn't resist. As I've said elsewhere, I'm not really interested in the main plots of DeFalco FF; my focus is on the relationship subplots. So we're cutting ahead to Fantastic Four #406, in which--at long last--the team latches onto some convincing evidence that Reed Richards is still alive.

He was under the couch cushions the whole time! )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

However, it would feel inapporpriate not to acknowledge that this is the second anniversary of the attack on Israel by Hamas, which has led to the massively destructive war in Gaza.

Tonight is the first supermoon of 2025, the Harvest Moon. Though our community here is scattered across the globe, and we all see a slighty different assortment of constellations, we all see the exact same moon in our skies, which is a lovely thought, no?

Britain, and the world, lost three remarkable, and remarkably different, ladies in the arts and sciences this week.

Primatologist, anthrolopologist and outspoken environmental activist Jane Goodall, whose six decades plus career studying chimpanzees transformed an entire field of science.

Superb character actress Patricia Routeledge, perhaps best known as the magnificently monstrous social climber Hyacinth Bouquet (Spelled "B-U-C-K-E-T") though personally I was always more partial to her role as a retired housewife turned PI in Lancashire's "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates".

And Jilly Cooper, whose writing career led to the creation of an entire romance sub-genre know as the bonk-buster.

Oh, and if you're looking for something gentle, beautiful and thoughtful to read, Charlie Mackesy's sequel to 2019's "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse" (Which I know helped me, and others, get through some dour times in 2020) just arrived in shops this week, called "Always Remember: the Boy, the Mole, the Fox, the Horse and the Storm"

Here are the first two pages to show J'Onn J'Onzz ever, from DETECTIVE COMICS #225. They showcase Dr. Saul Erdel's original hair and--almost as unfortunate--his death:

It sure is lucky he stranded an alien who was not only NOT interested in conquering the Earth, but who seemed to be the CHILLEST DUDE IN ALL THE COSMOS. )

Cemetery Kids Don't Die is game horror.

It's four teens, the already unsettling game they're playing, and further unsettling.

One of them opens issue #1 describing herself already shook: " Nothing scares me anymore.

Porto, Portugal

I have never been to Portugal before, and I probably wouldn't have had it on my list except that someone I know lived there, and for a while I thought they might be amenable to me visiting.

I booked the flight before I realised they weren't, and so had a section of my trip that was basically a blank with nothing much planned.

five days, four nights in Porto, Portugal - no plans but what we make for ourselves )

The thing that never keeps being amazing to me is just how steeped in history Europe is, particularly in their architecture and their town design. Like, buildings that are hundreds of years old, still being used in the function for which they were built. Upgraded and developed and retrofitted on the inside, and sometimes the outside, but still...the function for which they were built.

Amazing.

--

Wednesday evening, I went out to the Jardim do Morro, a garden on the south-side of the city, with beautiful views westwards over the river. I ended up at the restaurant just below it that overlooks the river and had dinner, although I was originally planning to have dinner back at the apartment. Gotta say, the food was excellent: squid ink linguine with garlic and tomato prawns, and a dessert of tiramisu.

--

Thursday...I was kind of hoping to do a tour up to Geres National Park, but I didn't book the space I saw in time, and so that opportunity is gone.

I ended up chilling in various restaurants and coffee shops for the day, heading back to the room to sleep and write for a couple of hours. I had a good lunch and a good dinner and a decent sleep, and was ready (so I thought) for the next day's travel...

Summaries: for Real Boys:
Ray looked out from between his fingers. The creature was there, on the other side of Mr. Thug, and it had lots of silvery fur and teeth that would be gleaming really nicely if the 'liner hadn't gone and taken most of the light with it. Between Mr. Thug and Ray, there was a pair of tall boots. Tilting his head back, Ray looked up, up past the red jacket all the way to the head, which was wearing a wide-brimmed hat. On the face under the hat there was a small smile.

"What the," Ray said. "Who the."

for Real Worlds:
"His existence is a violation of Armistice Statute—"
"God laws."
"Yes."
It took only one long stride for Ray to get into Thatcher's space and to her credit she didn’t back down. "You're gonna quote God laws at me?" He jabbed her with a stiff finger. "Who's playin God here, huh? You wave the fucking God laws at me while you got Fraser strapped to a table somewhere so you can put his fucking brains in a blender and take what he is? Look in a fucking mirror, lady."
"For some reason I can't fathom, Mr. Kowalski, I like you, so I'm going to give you a piece of advice." Her chin came up. "You might watch your words. Unless you want to join Fraser on charges of sedition."
"What?" Vecchio was incredulous. "You're yankin me, right? Fraser’s a kitchen appliance, but he's man enough to be brought up on charges? How the Jee does that compute?"

A sequel to Real Boys:
Three years raising sheep on Clementine, and it all comes crashing down in a skip storm, some consequential psychosis, a kidnapping and a global catastrophe. He may be the universe's punching bag, but Ray will fight for freak love. He's getting Fraser back, God Laws be damned.

Reccer's Notes: There are very few AUs that put the due South characters into spaaace! This is a fusion with the Bladerunner universe where Fraser's an android looking for the killers of his AI father and partners up with Ray Kowalski, a futuristic but very recognisable CPD cop. Salieri's a marvelous writer who takes aspects of the Bladerunner universe and expands on them with extraordinary worldbuilding to tell a complex and riveting tale. There's a gradually developing relationship between Ray and Fraser, nefarious villains, and anti-android laws that wrench the boys apart so that both Rays have to fight to get Fraser back. A triumph, and a due South classic. Here's a quote from a comment by Moth: "The other day I was talking to a friend about Philip K. Dick adaptations and I said that it was funny how one of the best adaptations out there was a due South fanfic. So I went and searched for it to see if it lived up to my memories and it actually exceeded them. This is the best type of AU, one that transplants the canon characters, storylines, and themes to a new universe, while also commenting on the both the canon as well as the nature of fiction." It's also a bloody good read!

Why this piece is awesome: Eethok specializes in medieval manuscript-style art, which is perfect to depict the Fellowship setting off on their quest. The details are great and there's a lot packed in - including unlikely-looking wargs, Bill the pony, the gates to Moria (and the lake monster), Smaug in the sky, and Sauron's eye. The border is fantastic, as well. Lovely!
