Thursday:

11:00-12:00 Spotlight on Becky Cloonan— Comic-Con special guest Becky Cloonan, one of the most versatile artists in comics today, talks to Jimmy Aquino (Comics News Insider podcast host) about her career in comics and illustration, collaborating with writers, artists, and musicians, and the dark secrets she learned through 15 years of self-publishing. Room 32AB

If there is any way that I could even possibly get her autograph before or after this, it would be AMAZING.

Funnily enough, immediately after this in the same room, Bill Amend (Fox Trot) will be speaking. Depending on how the schedule and meeting of friends breaks down, I'm tempted to stick around to hear what he has to say. Fox Trot was one of the first distinctively "meta nerdy" comic strips that I ever encountered.

1:00-2:00 Trailblazers of Comics— Comic-Con special guests Lynn Johnston and Kate Beaton represent the best of contemporary cartooning. With beginnings outside of the traditional mainstream or indie comic industry, each built a loyal following of fans with serialized comics on their own terms. The Beat's Heidi MacDonald addresses the origins of each artist's career, the financial reality of doing comics for a living, and the craft of producing a serialized comic. Room 25ABC

This one is a maybe, since I can't help thinking they've paired up these two guests simply because they're Canadian.

3:00-4:00 Graphic Novels: The Bookstore Crowd— The comics world looks at "mainstream comics" as the superhero crowd, the ones available in comic book stores every Wednesday. But the real mainstream comics and graphic novels are in bookstores and created by a whole different crowd, one that lacks, for the most part, capes, powers, and spandex. Comics journalist Tom Spurgeon (comicsreporter.com) talks to Comic-Con special guests Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant!), Alison Bechdel (Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama), Brecht Evens (The Making of), Jennifer and Matthew Holm (Babymouse series), Nate Powell (Any Empire), and Jason Shiga (Empire State) about their popular graphic novels that appeal to a more diverse audience in bookstores all over the world. Room 23ABC

Now, this one I am REALLY excited about! What a great group of people with unique talents! Hopefully, if this is well moderated, this could be one of the best panels from the whole event.

There are several others that go well into the evening, but I will probably have to leave early to relieve Yebisu on babysitting duty.

Friday:

10:00-11:00 Community: School is Back in Session— Joel McHale (The Soup), Gillian Jacobs (The Box), Danny Pudi (Chuck), Yvette Nicole Brown (Family Guy), and Alison Brie (Mad Men) from the hit Sony TV comedy have graduated to the Convention Center in advance of their fourth season. Join your favorite Greendale study group for a panel and Q&A to find out firsthand what surprises are in store for the show's return to NBC this fall. Ballroom 20

I am noting the conspicuous absence of Dan Harmon from this guest list. I also have to wonder how much of this will be damage control along the lines of "Oh no, we're not being cancelled! And the new showrunners are cool!" Still, that doesn't mean I won't be going! XD

11:15-12:15 Join the Revolution! Nickelodeon's Legend of Korra— The cast and crew of Legend of Korra offer an in-depth discussion of Nickelodeon's hottest new series. Executive producer and creator team Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino (Avatar: The Last Airbender) are joined by co-executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender) as they discuss the creative process that brought the first book in the Korra series to life. You'll also get to hear from your favorite characters as talented voice actors Janet Varney (Korra), David Faustino (Mako), P. J. Byrne (Bolin) and Seychelle Gabriel (Asami) will be featured on the panel and renowned voice director Andrea Romano (Avatar: The Last Airbender) will direct the actors in a live performance from the series. And if you're extra nice, Mike and Bryan may even drop a hint or two about Book 2. So don't miss out! Moderated by Rich Magallanes, senior VP of current series for Nickelodeon. Ballroom 20

I hope that this means cryptic "hint" phrase there will be some clip or another from Book 2. I'd like to see the villain they've come up with, and I have to admit, I'm curious to see Andrea Romano in person, someone whose name I'm familiar with, but haven't actually seen before. And a live voice reading would be awesome. :D

1:30-2:30 Spotlight on Kate Beaton— Comic-Con special guest Kate Beaton, the cartoonist behind the wildly popular webcomic Hark! A Vagrant and the New York Times bestseller of the same name, presents an overview of her work. Room 5AB

Depending on whether or not I get to see her in action on Thursday, I may or may not go to this. On one hand, other sessions like this that I've been to have always been pretty amazing. (Lynda Barry several years ago made me feel like we were having tea together in a really cool restaurant, not in a room with several hundred people, for example.) On the other, eating and the desire to move may win out after a morning of Ballroom 20 excitement.

Doing this one would also mean that I'd be unable to attend the Adventure Time comic book presentation; they're in rooms that are very far away from each other, so dashing between them is not an option. (Plus, rude to the people involved.)

After this, there are some cool panels in the late afternoon and evening that I'm curious about, but not 100% committed to. Tiredness and babysitting concerns may win out again.

Saturday:

11:15-12:15 Cartoon Network: Adventure Time— Not just any ol' panel, this is Adventure Time! Join series creator Pendleton Ward (Lumpy Space Princess), Jeremy Shada (Finn), Tom Kenny (Ice King), and others to experience the all-out good time that is Cartoon Network's Adventure Time! There will be singing, live readings, lots of exclusive clips, and other mathematical surprises! Room 6A

This means that Saturday is the day I'm officially wearing my costume! XD I'm really hoping that I get to take my picture with some other cool cosplayers... and maybe meet Pendleton Ward?!

This does also mean that we're not doing Quick Draw this year. Although I'm sad about that, I feel like we've done it enough to know what's going on. It's always funny, but I will not be that sad without it. It nixes the Warehouse 13 panel, too, but that's OK--I'm going to be in Ballroom 20 a lot on Friday, and I have had it by the time the end of the day rolls around.

3:15-4:15 Creating Unforgettable Villains— Chris Huntley (story development expert, creator of the Dramatica Story Theory) tells you why the best villains are always the most interesting characters in their stories. So why create two-dimensional, unbeatable, unbelievable bad guys and gals when you can develop them into real, breathing, fully dimensional villains? This how-to panel gives you practical techniques for crafting memorable rogues, heavies, and other nasties. Marriott Hall 2, Marriott Marquis & Marina

This one is a definite maybe. For my writing purposes, I've felt for a long time that my villains were somewhat on the paper tiger side; it was only recently that I felt like I created villains who were actually scary/menacing enough to be real threats. However, I've never been to this location, and I have no idea who Christ Huntley is or whether the workshop would be actually useful or not.

5:00-6:00 Locke & Key— The Locke family has been through a lot so far in the acclaimed series, but the worst is yet to come in Omega, the concluding Locke & Key storyline coming this winter. IDW editor-in-chief and L&K editor Chris Ryall hosts a sit-down with the Locke & Key creators, writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez, as they tell you what is coming in Omega, what else they have planned once that wraps, and a few surprises as well. Room 9

This one is also tempting. I've always been curious about how this writer and artists approach my favorite horror comic story, and I'd love to hear what they have to say.

After this, we reach the event-horizon of exhaustion/mounting childcare costs... on the other hand, there are some amazing evening panels that we'd love to attend. Dunno yet what to do.

Sunday:

Regrettably, not a lot is grabbing my attention here. I'll probably find something I'm into on the day of, possibly try to get a few autographs.

1:30-2:30 Spotlight on Alison Bechdel— The award-winning graphic novelist and Comic-Con special guest Alison Bechdel talks about her work, from Dykes to Watch Out For through Fun Home and her latest, this year's smash Are You My Mother? Room 23ABC

Again, this one will depend on whether or not I've had a chance to see her at other times. There's also the exhaustion event horizon and babysitting costs of Sunday activities.

General notes: I will not be doing any Hall H stuff. If Doctor Who is in Hall H, then too bad. I can only handle Ballroom 20 (2,000 of my closest friends are bearable, but 7,500 of them are scary.)
